National Historic Site "Oka Castle Ruins” in autumn

Although some trees are almost at the end of their autumn foliage, overall, the autumn foliage at the ruins of Oka Castle is at its best.
In particular, the area around the ruins of Nakagawa Kakuzaemon's residence and the area from the ruins of Shimizu-mon Gate to the ruins of Shimobarumon Gate are at their best.

Oka Castle is famous as an impregnable, natural fortress.

Oka Castle was built on a rocky hill 325 meters above sea level, created by pyroclastic flows from Mt.Aso.

Oka Castle was built on a tongue-shaped plateau between the Inaba and Shirataki Rivers, tributaries of the Ono River. Surrounded by precipitous cliffs, the castle was a solid fortress with a stone wall on top of the cliffs. The area is 1,000,000 square meters, which is equivalent to 22 times the size of Tokyo Dome.

Although there are no buildings there today due to the Meiji Era (1868-1912) decree abolishing the castle, the impressive size, the stonewalls, and the spectacular view of Kuju mountain range, Mt.Aso and Mt.Sobo from the ruins of the castle are sure to impress visitors.
